NEWARK, NEW JERSEY — Police have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run that left a 9-year-old girl critically injured in Newark earlier this week, city officials announced Wednesday.

Sawab O. Williams of Newark was taken into custody after being identified as the suspect in an April 1 collision at the intersection of Irvine Turner Boulevard and Spruce Street, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr.
Officers responded to the scene around 7:36 a.m., where the child had been struck by a vehicle. The driver fled without stopping. The girl was rushed to University Hospital and remains in stable but critical condition.
Detectives obtained a warrant for Williams’ arrest following their investigation. He is now facing charges of assault by auto and endangering an injured victim.
The charges against Williams are accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
