Lakewood School Trip Ends in Disaster as Bus Full of Childen Overturns on Parkway

MONTVALE, N.J. — A school bus heading to New York State overturned on the Garden State Parkway on Monday night, injuring multiple passengers and causing an overnight closure of northbound lanes.

The crash occurred around 7:40 p.m. near mile marker 170.9, just south of Exit 172 (Grand Avenue), according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s 511nj.org. All northbound lanes were initially closed, with one lane reopening by 9:45 p.m.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy acknowledged the crash on social media. “I’ve been briefed on a crash on the Garden State Parkway earlier tonight near the James Gandolfini Service Area involving an overturned school bus from Lakewood,” he posted on X.

Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali also addressed the accident on Facebook, confirming injuries. State Senator Holly Schepisi stated that several children were among those hurt.

At 9 p.m., Ghassali provided an update: “Thankfully no fatalities reported. … 31 total occupants on bus heading to New York, 13 transported to local hospitals.”

One person was listed in critical condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
