Injured grey seal pup rescued in Atlantic City, receiving treatment at Marine Mammal Stranding Center

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A male grey seal pup found injured near the Golden Nugget Casino parking lot on March 4 is now receiving medical care at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC), officials said.

The pup was discovered with a severe open wound on the back of his head. It remains unclear whether the injury was caused by a terrestrial or aquatic predator. Due to the severity of the wound, the seal was transported to MMSC for immediate treatment.

After evaluation by MMSC’s veterinarian, the seal was placed on oral and topical medications to prevent infection, as well as pain management to aid in his recovery. Despite the injury, the pup, estimated to be 2-3 months old and weighing 52 pounds, is in good body condition and has begun eating on his own.

The pup is currently in stable but guarded condition and will remain at the facility until fully healed. Seals typically require at least six weeks of rehabilitation before they are ready for release.
