TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey City University (NJCU) has voted unanimously to pursue a strategic merger with Kean University, a decision backed by Governor Phil Murphy and Secretary of Higher Education Brian Bridges.
The announcement follows efforts by NJCU’s administration, Board of Trustees, and a state-appointed monitor to secure the institution’s long-term viability while maintaining a strong public higher education presence in Jersey City and Hudson County.
“The NJCU Board’s intent to pursue a strategic merger with Kean University continues this commitment and marks the beginning of a thorough and deliberative process to unify these mission-aligned institutions,” Murphy and Bridges said in a joint statement.
State and institutional leaders will now work toward a transition plan aimed at ensuring student success and long-term stability for both universities.
