WASHINGTON — A Metropolitan Police Department detective has been placed on administrative leave after shooting a man following a traffic crash in Southeast D.C. early Saturday morning, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 12:57 a.m. in the 1800 block of Potomac Avenue, Southeast. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, an off-duty detective was involved in a crash, after which both drivers exited their vehicles and got into an altercation. During the confrontation, the off-duty detective fired his service weapon, striking the other driver.
The victim, an adult male, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police confirmed that the shooting was not captured by body-worn camera footage.
The detective has been placed on administrative leave while the Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team reviews the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will also conduct an independent review of the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances that led to the use of force.
