WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man was shot and killed inside a Navy Yard apartment Tuesday afternoon, and police arrested a suspect at the scene, officials announced Wednesday.

Officers responded around 4:28 p.m. to an apartment complex in the 1000 block of 1st Street SE after receiving a report of a shooting. Inside, they found 61-year-old Darryl Smith of Southeast, D.C., suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts.

Authorities arrested 37-year-old De’Angelo Goldston of Southeast, D.C., at the scene and recovered a firearm. Following an investigation, Goldston was charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed.

Detectives determined the shooting was domestic in nature, though further details about the incident have not been released.
