WASHINGTON — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday called for increased transparency and potential cuts to federal funding for Elon Musk’s defense and space contracts, arguing that government spending on such projects should face greater scrutiny.
“If you want to start with waste, start with Elon’s defense contracts at the Pentagon,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “In fact, we should start with transparency around defense contracts in general, which take up an enormous sum of public funds.”
The congresswoman’s comments come as SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company, continues to secure lucrative contracts with the Pentagon and NASA. The company has played a key role in U.S. space exploration and national security, including launching military satellites and working on classified defense projects.
Ocasio-Cortez has frequently criticized government spending on defense and military initiatives, advocating instead for reallocating funds to domestic programs. Her latest remarks align with broader Democratic efforts to reassess military expenditures, though no formal legislation has been introduced to target SpaceX’s funding.
Her call to cut funding on America’s space program is not likely to gain any traction in Congress.
