CUMBERLAND, Md. — Residents can expect increased parking enforcement throughout the city as the Cumberland Police Department (CPD) strengthens its efforts by hiring additional parking enforcement officers and expanding their reach beyond downtown.
The department announced that new officers will be equipped with vehicles and tasked with ensuring compliance with parking regulations, including payment of fees, time limits, and handicap parking restrictions. Previously, enforcement efforts were concentrated in the downtown area, but complaints from other neighborhoods have prompted CPD to broaden its focus.
While police officers have historically handled some parking violations, the expanded enforcement division will take on those responsibilities, allowing officers to focus on other public safety concerns.
“Maintaining parking compliance in the downtown area has been a priority, but we recognize the need to address concerns citywide,” CPD stated in its announcement.
Residents are encouraged to comply with parking regulations as the department rolls out its enhanced enforcement initiative.
