TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey commuters are facing significant delays this morning due to a combination of police activity, heavy traffic volume, and ongoing construction projects across the state.
On I-295 in Mansfield Township, police activity has closed the ramps in both directions at Exit 52 for Columbus Road. The right shoulder is also closed, and traffic is being detoured. Authorities are urging drivers to use caution when navigating the area.
The George Washington Bridge is experiencing delays on both the upper and lower eastbound levels. As of 8:21 a.m., the upper level remains open but with a 25-minute delay on I-95 from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge. The lower level is also open, but drivers are experiencing a 15-minute delay along the same stretch.
Heavy congestion is impacting the Garden State Parkway northbound from south of Exit 138 in Kenilworth to north of Exit 140 in Union Township. A two-mile delay has been reported, caused by typical morning traffic volume.
Southbound I-295 is also seeing slow traffic, with delays stretching from south of Exit 29 in Haddon Heights to south of Exit 26N near I-76 and I-676 in Bellmawr. All lanes remain open, but congestion is causing significant slowdowns.
In South Jersey, NJ 55 northbound is moving slowly approaching NJ 42 in Deptford Township due to volume, while NJ 42 northbound is backed up from south of Exit 10A in Gloucester Township to I-295 in Bellmawr.
Drivers heading into Jersey City are encountering delays on the Pulaski Skyway northbound between Broadway and Jersey Avenue, with travel times currently between 5 to 10 minutes. In Newark, NJ 21 southbound is backed up between Riverside Avenue and Wright Street, with travel times ranging from 10 to 15 minutes.
Further congestion is reported on NJ 3 eastbound between Clifton and Secaucus, where traffic is moving slowly from west of NJ 21 to east of Meadowlands Parkway. Drivers should expect travel times of 15 to 20 minutes.
Ongoing construction projects are also contributing to delays. On the New Jersey Turnpike outer roadway southbound, one right lane is closed between Interchange 11 in Woodbridge Township and Interchange 10 in Edison Township due to roadwork. US 46 westbound in Hackettstown is experiencing lane shifts due to construction east of County Road 517, with work expected to continue until 2:30 p.m.
In Ocean County, US 9 in both directions from north of NJ 88 in Lakewood Township to NJ 70 in Toms River Township is affected by lane shifts for construction, which will last until 4:00 p.m. Additionally, US 46 eastbound between NJ 53 in Denville Township and Mountain Lakes is impacted by a closed left shoulder, with construction scheduled to continue until 2:59 p.m.
Drivers are advised to plan for extra travel time and remain cautious as congestion and detours impact several major routes throughout the state.
