GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ — An 83-year-old man died in a multi-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon that left two others injured at the intersection of South Pitney Road and Collins Road, according to police.
The crash, which occurred around 3:23 p.m., involved five vehicles. Police said James T. Johnson of Galloway Township was traveling northbound on Pitney Road when he attempted to pass a Lincoln Navigator that was stopped and waiting to turn left onto Collins Road. Johnson sideswiped the Navigator and veered into oncoming traffic, where his vehicle collided with a Mercedes GL4. The impact caused the Mercedes to strike two additional vehicles, a Chevrolet Cruz and a Nissan Xterra.
Johnson suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The driver of the Mercedes and a passenger were transported to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center Mainland Division with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Galloway Township Police Department credited multiple emergency services, including the Galloway Township EMS, Atlanticare Paramedics, Bayview Fire Department, and the Galloway Township Office of Emergency Management, for assisting at the scene.
