LITTLE EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Authorities discovered the body of an elderly woman floating in a lagoon behind a home on North Boom Street early Sunday morning, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police were dispatched to the residence around 7:45 a.m. after receiving a report of the body, officials said. Officers retrieved the woman from the water, where she was pronounced deceased.
The investigation, led by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Major Crime Unit, Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, is ongoing.
“This apparent drowning is currently under investigation,” Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a statement, adding that “the death of this female does not appear to be suspicious at this time.”
No further details about the victim’s identity or the circumstances surrounding the incident were immediately released.
The investigation continues as officials work to determine the events leading to the woman’s death.
