Cumberland prepares for New Year’s Eve celebration with temporary traffic changes

CUMBERLAND, MD — The city’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration and ball drop will take place downtown on Tuesday, December 31, from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., prompting several temporary traffic changes to ensure the safety of attendees and maintain smooth traffic flow.

According to the Cumberland Police Department, traffic adjustments and no parking zones will be in effect from 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Key changes include:

  • Baltimore Street will be closed between Mechanic and George Streets, though traffic from Greene or Washington Streets can continue on North or South Mechanic Streets.
  • Centre Street at Dexter Place will be closed throughout the event, with all traffic redirected up Dexter Place toward George Street.
  • Liberty Street at Frederick Street will also be closed for the entire event.

Additionally, the Baltimore Street Bridge will temporarily restrict traffic during the fireworks display, which begins at 9:00 p.m. and will remain closed until the end of the festivities.

Officials urge drivers to obey all traffic control devices and plan alternate routes for downtown travel during the celebration.

Residents with questions or concerns can contact the Cumberland Street Department at (301) 759-6622 or via email at devin.burke@cumberlandmd.gov.
