AKRON, Ohio — Akron police and animal rescue teams intervened in a severe animal hoarding and neglect case on Sunday, December 15, rescuing more than 170 animals living in deplorable conditions.
Officers responded to a tip about the situation and discovered numerous animals suffering from neglect at a single address. Some of the animals had already died due to starvation or exposure to freezing temperatures, authorities reported.
With the assistance of FOCUS Rescue & Rehabilitation, 116 chickens, 4 ducks, 4 turkeys, 7 pigeons, 36 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, and 5 goats — now 6 after one gave birth — were rescued from the property. The surviving animals are being rehabilitated and will be placed in new homes.
“This was a tragic situation for these animals, but thanks to the quick response of our officers and the support of FOCUS Rescue, many were saved and will now have a second chance,” the department stated.
The case remains under investigation, and police have not yet released details about potential charges against the property owner.
