GAINESVILLE, VA — A 63-year-old Gainesville man was arrested early Thursday morning following a domestic dispute that left a woman injured and raised concerns about the welfare of three young children in the home.

Prince William County police responded to a residence in the 14200 block of Clatterbuck Loop at 1:02 a.m. on November 30 after receiving a report of a domestic altercation. Officers found that the accused, identified as Eduard Mendez Ugarte, and a 57-year-old woman had been involved in a verbal argument that escalated into physical violence.

During the incident, the accused pushed the victim out of a bed, causing her to strike a nightstand and lose consciousness. Three children, all under the age of 10, were present in the bedroom at the time. One of the children called emergency services.

Police determined that Ugarte, who was intoxicated, was unable to adequately care for the children. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Following the investigation, Ugarte was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, three counts of child neglect, domestic assault and battery, and two counts of violating a protective order. He is being held without bond, and a court date is pending.
