NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams publicly criticized members of his own Democratic Party for comparing former President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, calling the comparison “an insult” to Holocaust victims and survivors.

During an appearance on The View on Friday, Adams was asked by co-host Joy Behar to comment on Trump’s influence and rhetoric. While avoiding directly condemning the former president, Adams expressed concern over the divisive language used in modern political discourse.

“We’ve reached a point in this country where we no longer want to engage in conversation,” Adams said. “They were even calling [Trump] Hitler. That’s an insult. That was an insult to the millions of Jews and others who died. We know what Hitler did.”

Adams’ remarks come amid heightened tensions between Democrats and Trump, as the former president campaigns for a potential return to the White House. Critics within the Democratic Party have frequently likened his policies and rhetoric to authoritarian regimes, but Adams cautioned against such comparisons, arguing they diminish the historical gravity of the Holocaust.

While Adams did not shy away from criticizing Trump in the past, his refusal to single out the former president during the exchange highlights his effort to navigate the political divide.

The mayor’s comments have drawn mixed reactions, with some praising his call for respectful dialogue and others criticizing him for not taking a firmer stance.
