TRENTON, N.J. — Thanksgiving Eve, commonly known as “Blackout Wednesday,” marks one of the busiest drinking nights of the year in New Jersey and across the country. Officials warn that the evening, which kicks off the holiday season, also poses significant risks for drunk driving, binge drinking, and alcohol-related fatalities.
The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is statistically the deadliest time for alcohol-related crashes and injuries. Authorities say the combination of family reunions, social gatherings, and long weekends contributes to an uptick in heavy drinking, particularly on Thanksgiving Eve.
Law enforcement agencies statewide are ramping up patrols and DUI checkpoints to address the increase in impaired drivers. Drivers are urged to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, arranging for a taxi or rideshare service, or calling a friend for a safe ride home if they plan to consume alcohol.
“Ensuring everyone gets home safely is critical during this time of year,” said officials in a statewide alert. “Impaired driving is 100% preventable, and we encourage people to make responsible choices.”
Community leaders and safety advocates stress the importance of awareness during this high-risk period, reminding residents that a single decision can save lives.
New Jersey authorities remind residents to celebrate responsibly, as holiday drinking spikes make roads dangerous for all.
