NEWARK, N.J. — Morning commuters faced significant disruptions across several major roadways in New Jersey on Tuesday due to crashes, vehicle issues, and heavy traffic volumes.
On I-295 southbound, a crash south of Exit 60 near I-195/NJ 129 in Hamilton Township closed the left shoulder as of 8:00 a.m. Further north, a vehicle off the roadway near Exit 57 in Bordentown Township forced the closure of the right shoulder.
Meanwhile, a disabled vehicle on the George Washington Bridge upper-level toll plaza westbound blocked the right lane in Fort Lee just before 8:00 a.m., adding to congestion at the heavily traveled crossing. Delays at the George Washington Bridge’s eastbound lower and upper levels also reached 40 minutes for drivers traveling from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge.
Other significant incidents included an overturned tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike’s western spur northbound exit ramp at Interchange 15W near I-280 in Kearny, with the right shoulder blocked since 5:44 a.m. Additionally, a downed utility pole and traffic signal on US 9 near County Road 547 in Lakewood Township caused lane shifts in both directions as of 6:22 a.m.
Heavy delays were reported at the Lincoln Tunnel, where travel times eastbound from the New Jersey Turnpike Exit 16E reached 30 minutes in both the center and south tunnels. The Holland Tunnel saw eastbound travel times of 35 minutes from Exit 14C on the Turnpike and 30 minutes from New Jersey Route 139 at Tonnelle Circle.
