Criminal Political Corruption Investigation Lingers Over NJEA Boss Sean Spiller’s Run for New Jersey Governor

Sean Spiller, the current president of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) and a Democratic candidate for governor, is facing significant challenges due to an ongoing investigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. The probe centers on allegations from his tenure as Montclair’s mayor, specifically concerning the receipt and distribution of unauthorized benefits.

The investigation, which has been active since at least December 2022, scrutinizes claims that Spiller and other Montclair officials improperly accessed full health benefits despite being part-time employees.

This issue gained prominence when Spiller invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a deposition related to a whistleblower lawsuit filed by Montclair’s former Chief Financial Officer. The lawsuit alleges that Spiller and others unlawfully obtained health benefits and retaliated against the CFO for raising concerns.

Adding to the controversy, Spiller is accused of signing an illegal, no-bid contract with the law firm O’Toole Scrivo to investigate allegations of bias within the Montclair Fire Department. This contract reportedly bypassed the required public procurement process, raising further ethical questions.

These allegations have overshadowed Spiller’s gubernatorial campaign, raising concerns about his ethical conduct and decision-making.

Political analysts suggest that the ongoing investigation could significantly impact his candidacy, especially as the Democratic primary approaches. The situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability for public officials, particularly those seeking higher office.

Multiple sources confirmed that the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office offered no comment on the investigation but confirmed it is ongoing.
