Police investigating fatal shooting of 19-year-old in Silver Spring

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Detectives with the Montgomery County Department of Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man found behind a bus stop on Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring earlier this week.

Officers from the 3rd District responded to the 9300 block of Piney Branch Road around 2:38 p.m. on Tuesday, following reports of a person with injuries. Upon arrival, police located Diego Edilberto Borja-Cardona, 19, of Silver Spring, with signs of trauma to his body. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Borja-Cardona’s body has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy will determine the official cause and manner of death. Police have not released specific details on the nature of the trauma.

The investigation remains ongoing, with detectives from the Major Crimes Division pursuing leads.
