Violent Encounter at Store Leaves Victim Reeling After Ethnic Attack in D.C.

Washington, DC – A man has been arrested following an assault motivated by hate in Northwest DC.

On Saturday, at approximately 6:38 p.m., the victim was at a store in the 1700 block of 17th Street, Northwest, when the suspect approached and requested the victim buy an item for him. When the victim refused, the suspect spat on him and assaulted him while making derogatory comments based on the victim’s ethnicity. Responding officers quickly apprehended the suspect at the scene.

Warren Welcome, a 49-year-old resident of Southeast DC, was charged with Simple Assault (Hate Bias).

The Metropolitan Police Department is treating this incident as potentially motivated by hate or bias, although this designation may change as the investigation progresses. The Special Liaison Branch is actively assisting with the inquiry.
