CAROLINE COUNTY, Md. — A shed fire in Denton on Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of a 58-year-old man, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal and Maryland State Police. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, which occurred at 22320 Butler Court.

At approximately 2:24 p.m., the Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company responded to reports of a shed fire with injuries. Thirty-two firefighters arrived at the scene and brought the blaze under control within 30 minutes. The victim was found outside the shed and later succumbed to his injuries. His body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the exact cause of death.

The fire, which destroyed the shed and its contents, caused an estimated $15,000 in damages. Deputy State Fire Marshals have determined that the fire originated within the shed, but the exact cause remains under investigation.

A joint investigation between the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division and the Office of the State Fire Marshal is standard procedure in the event of a fatal fire.

“My heart aches after learning of another fire death, and every member of the Office of the State Fire Marshal extends our deepest condolences to the family,” said acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray.

The investigation is ongoing.
