STAFFORD, Va. — A 59-year-old woman from Maryland was arrested Monday afternoon after deputies found her asleep behind the wheel at a traffic light on Kings Highway, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the scene near the Sheetz convenience store around 1:32 p.m. after receiving a report of a suspected drunk driver.

When officers arrived, they discovered the woman’s vehicle in park with her foot on the accelerator and the driver still asleep. Upon waking, the woman attempted to conceal a paper bag containing mini-bottles of Goldschlager, but deputies quickly spotted the alcohol.

The woman displayed signs of intoxication and was found to have a prior history of driving under the influence. She had reportedly driven nearly 43 miles from La Plata, Maryland, to Stafford while under the influence. She was charged with a second DUI offense within five years and third offense refusal to submit to a test within 10 years.

The woman was taken into custody and is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
