Baltimore man sentenced for firearm possession in school zone, illegal firearm possession

BALTIMORE — A Baltimore man was sentenced Thursday to eight years in federal prison for possessing a firearm in a school zone and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland.

Troy Spencer, 49, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Julie R. Rubin to 96 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Spencer had been arrested after an altercation at Leith Walk Elementary Middle School in March 2023, where he brandished a firearm during a dispute at a school basketball game.

Authorities said Spencer confronted his son’s coaches over playing time at the game, leading to a physical altercation. He then pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at one of the coaches before the weapon was wrestled away. Spencer fled the scene but was arrested days later by the Baltimore Police Department’s Warrant Apprehension Task Force.

Spencer, a convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing firearms. His sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a national initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through coordinated law enforcement efforts.
