Tractor Trailer Crashes into Highway Sign on I-64, Driver Charged with Reckless Driving

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred Thursday morning involving a tractor trailer and an overhead highway sign on Interstate 64.

The incident happened at approximately 9:36 a.m. on westbound I-64 near the 200-mile marker. According to authorities, the raised bed of the tractor trailer struck an overhead traffic sign, causing the bed to separate from the cab of the truck. The bed remained upright against the damaged sign until it was removed around 11:00 a.m.

The driver of the tractor trailer, identified as Richard D. Houston, Jr., 62, of Lorton, Virginia, was not injured in the crash. He has been charged with reckless driving.

No further details regarding the extent of damage to the highway sign or traffic disruptions have been released. The investigation is ongoing.
