NEW CASTLE, Del. — A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday evening in New Castle, prompting an investigation by the Delaware State Police. The incident occurred on August 31, 2024, at approximately 9:46 p.m. on North Dupont Highway near the intersection of Hazeldell Avenue.
According to police, a black Volkswagen Passat was traveling southbound in the right lane of North Dupont Highway when the pedestrian, a 61-year-old man from New Castle, began crossing the highway from the right side, moving eastward. The man entered the right lane directly into the path of the oncoming Passat. Despite swerving to avoid the pedestrian, the driver was unable to prevent the collision.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are withholding his name until his family is notified.
The driver of the Passat, a 60-year-old woman from Bear, Delaware, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
The crash led to the closure of the roadway for approximately five hours as police conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
