MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A juvenile suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with multiple “swatting” incidents in Monroe Township and other jurisdictions, according to the Monroe Township Police Department. The arrest was made on August 21, 2024, following an investigation by the department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
The suspect’s actions came to light after police responded to a call on July 3, 2024, reporting a violent situation at a residence in Monroe Township. The call claimed that an individual had harmed family members and was armed. Upon arrival, police determined the report was false and was intended to elicit a large-scale police response. The suspect then allegedly attempted to extort money from the resident, threatening to continue the “swatting” incidents if payment was not made.
The same residence was targeted in additional swatting attempts by the suspect, according to police. Further investigation revealed that the juvenile was also suspected of committing similar “swatting” incidents in Orlando, Florida, where he is wanted by local authorities.
Detective Joseph Gentile of the Monroe Township Police Department charged the juvenile with two counts of creating a false public alarm, two counts of attempted theft by extortion, and one count of being a fugitive from justice due to the pending charges in Orlando.
In accordance with New Jersey law, the identity of the juvenile has not been disclosed. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Swatting, a dangerous practice where false reports are made to emergency services to provoke a significant police response, poses serious risks, including potential injury or death. Police advise that anyone who finds themselves a victim of swatting should remain calm and follow all instructions from responding officers.
