BRONX, NY – Shanice Martin, a 24-year-old woman from the Bronx, has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for the murder of her six-year-old son and the attempted murder of her two-year-old daughter. Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that Bronx Supreme Court Justice Laurence Busching delivered the sentence today, marking the conclusion of a heart-wrenching case.
In April 2019, Martin committed a horrific act against her children. She used a razor to slash the throats of both her son, Tyzavier Martin, and her daughter at the corner of Brook Avenue and Washington Avenue. After the attack, she left the severely injured children on the sidewalk and fled the scene. The children were quickly taken to local hospitals; however, Tyzavier later succumbed to complications from his injuries on June 14, 2019, after collapsing at school.
The evidence presented at trial led to Martin’s conviction on May 24, 2024. She was sentenced to 20 years to life for second-degree murder and an additional 10 years, with five years post-release supervision, for attempted second-degree murder. The sentences are set to run consecutively.
District Attorney Clark expressed profound sorrow over the incident, describing it as an “inexplicable act of cruelty and callousness.” This case has left lasting scars on the community and the surviving child, who continues to suffer from the trauma of the attack.
