CAMBRIDGE, MD—The Cambridge Police Department (CPD) reported multiple arrests following disturbances at an unsanctioned event on Friday, May 25, 2024, in the Greenwood Ave area of Cambridge. The event, advertised as “Freaknik” on social media, drew an unexpectedly large crowd, prompting significant police intervention.

Starting around 3 PM, before the event’s commencement at 4 PM, CPD deployed additional officers to Greenwood Ave to maintain order and deter violence among the attendees. As the event unfolded, approximately 400 individuals gathered, necessitating further support from off-duty officers, the Maryland State Police (MSP), and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office (DSO).

The situation escalated with large groups engaging in disorderly behavior, including fighting and causing disturbances in residential areas. Several areas marked with “No Trespassing” and “No Loitering” signs were overrun, and numerous vehicles were parked illegally in zones clearly marked “No Parking.”

Law enforcement officers used patrol vehicle speaker systems and direct verbal commands to disperse the crowds. However, many individuals resisted, showing defiance and hostility towards the officers. This resistance included throwing bottles at officers and patrol vehicles, with one MSP vehicle sustaining damage.

In response, officers were compelled to use force, deploying Oleoresin Capsicum (OC Spray) and Tasers to control the situation and make arrests. Several officers were assaulted during the event. In addition to the arrests, numerous parking citations were issued, and several vehicles were towed due to improper parking.

The CPD is continuing to assess the event’s impact on the community and is reviewing actions taken during the incident to ensure the safety and security of Cambridge residents.
