Brick Township Police Issue Crosswalk Safety Reminder for Memorial Day Weekend

BRICK TOWNSHIP, NJ — As Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer at the Jersey Shore, the Brick Township Police Department is emphasizing pedestrian safety at crosswalks. Under New Jersey State Law 39:4-36, motorists are mandated to stop for pedestrians within any crosswalk.

The law further stipulates that drivers must not pass other vehicles that have stopped at crosswalks to allow pedestrians to cross. Violations of this regulation carry a fine of $200.00.

Additionally, it is important to note that bicycles are not classified as pedestrians. Bicyclists share the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers, including the requirement to stop or yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Bicyclists are advised to dismount and walk their bicycles when using crosswalks to ensure safety for all.
