Crash snarls traffic on NJ Turnpike as morning commute sees major delays statewide

TRENTON, NJ — Tuesday morning commuters across New Jersey faced major disruptions, with several crashes and heavy congestion reported on key highways, according to traffic updates as of 8:40 a.m.

A crash on the New Jersey Turnpike inner roadway northbound near Interchange 13 in Linden has blocked the left lane, adding to delays in the area. Nearby, at the Exit ramp to I-278 Goethals Bridge from Interchange 13 in Elizabeth, a crash was reported but all lanes remain open with the vehicle on the right shoulder.

Key Points

  • Crash blocks left lane on NJ Turnpike inner roadway northbound in Linden
  • Garden State Parkway sees multiple delays northbound with up to 5-mile backups
  • Delays widespread on NJ Turnpike Eastern and Western Spurs, US 1, and NJ 29 due to volume

Turnpike crashes and construction complicate travel

Further congestion stems from another crash blocking a left lane at the exit ramp to I-278, Route 1 and 9 from Interchange 13 in Elizabeth. Earlier, an eastbound crash on the Pennsylvania Extension in Mansfield Township continued to cause slowdowns with the right shoulder blocked.

In addition to accidents, emergency construction overnight has closed and detoured all lanes on I-80 in both directions at Exit 34 (NJ 15) in Wharton, adding further complications for early travelers.

Major volume delays reported across Garden State

Heavy delays were reported on the New Jersey Turnpike Eastern Spur northbound from the Southern Mixing Bowl in Newark to north of Interchange 15W (I-280) in Kearny, with a 3.5-mile backup. The Western Spur northbound also reported a 2-mile delay in the same area.

Garden State Parkway commuters faced significant slowdowns, with a 5-mile delay northbound from Woodbridge Township to Clark Township and a 4-mile delay near Kenilworth and Irvington. Additional congestion was noted around Lakewood Township.

Route 1, Route 29, and Shore routes impacted by volume

US 1 northbound in Lawrence Township and NJ 29 northbound in Trenton both saw delays, although all lanes remained open. Eastbound travelers on NJ 72 through Stafford Township to Ship Bottom also encountered slower movement, likely due to volume heading toward shore points.

Drivers are advised to expect continued delays and to plan extra travel time this morning.

Crashes and construction snarled New Jersey’s highways early today, slowing commutes across the state.
