Massive New Jersey wildfire grows to 11,500 acres, thousands evacuated

OCEAN COUNTY, N.J. — A fast-moving wildfire has burned through 11,500 acres in Ocean and Lacey Townships as of Wednesday, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, with firefighters gaining ground in their containment efforts.

The blaze, dubbed the Jones Road Wildfire, is currently 30% contained. At its peak, the fire prompted the evacuation of roughly 5,000 residents across Lacey and Ocean Townships on Tuesday.

Officials said those evacuation orders have since been fully lifted.

Twenty structures remain threatened by the fire, though no injuries have been reported. One commercial building has been confirmed destroyed along with multiple outbuildings and vehicles, according to fire officials. A full damage assessment is still in progress.

Road closures remain in effect in the area, with Route 532 (Wells Mills Road) closed between Route 72 and the Garden State Parkway, as well as Bryant Road and Jones Road. However, the Garden State Parkway and Route 9 have reopened in both directions.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has deployed extensive resources, including fire engines, bulldozers, aircraft, and ground crews. Local fire departments, rescue teams, and state and county agencies are assisting in the response.

Firefighters continue battling flames as threat remains

Officials have not yet determined the cause of the wildfire. Investigators are actively working to identify the origin of the fire as part of a broader inquiry into its ignition and spread.

The Jones Road Wildfire marks one of the largest blazes in the state this season, posing ongoing challenges for responders due to dry conditions and wind.
