Utica woman armed with steak knife charged after threatening officers during domestic dispute

UTICA, N.Y. — A domestic dispute turned volatile early Monday when a Utica woman allegedly brandished a steak knife and threatened police officers responding to the scene, according to the Utica Police Department.

Officers arrived at the location to find a man reporting that he and his girlfriend were in the midst of an ongoing argument. As officers attempted to engage with the woman, she became verbally aggressive and uncooperative.

While efforts to de-escalate continued, the woman reportedly grabbed a steak knife and approached the officers in a threatening manner. Officers then drew a Taser as a precaution.

With the assistance of the woman’s boyfriend, officers were able to safely disarm her. She was then taken into custody without further incident.

Police identified the suspect as Chanel King, 32, of Utica. She was transported to the Utica Police Department for processing.

Charges filed following knife incident

Due to the nature of the threat posed to law enforcement, an investigator from the department’s Criminal Investigations Division was called back to duty. King was subsequently charged with menacing a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree.
