Man shoots wife, then himself inside Schenectady apartment

SCHENECTADY, NY — A 44-year-old man is dead and a woman is hospitalized after a domestic shooting inside a North End Drive apartment Thursday evening, Schenectady Police confirmed.

Officers were dispatched to 540 North End Drive around 7:19 p.m. on April 17 following reports of an altercation called in by neighbors. As officers approached the residence, they heard a woman screaming from an upstairs apartment, stating that a man had a gun.

As officers climbed the building’s common stairway, they heard two gunshots from within the apartment. Police forced entry and found the female victim with gunshot wounds to her hand and torso. She was immediately evacuated and treated on the scene by officers before being transported to a local hospital.

Inside the apartment, police located the suspected gunman, Donald Rickson, 44, of Schenectady, who had sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities stated that Rickson was married to the victim. Her identity has not been released.

Victim in stable condition as probe continues

The woman remains hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition. Schenectady Police said the investigation is still ongoing and further details have not been released.
