LEXINGTON, KY — A 29-year-old special education teacher was arrested Wednesday after allegedly driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run crash that left a pedestrian critically injured on Georgetown Road.

Jamie Caldwell was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol – 1st Offense (Aggravated) and Leaving the Scene of an Accident/Failure to Render Aid/Assist with Death or Serious Physical Injury, according to Lexington police.

The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. on the 1000 block of Georgetown Road, near Mercer Road. Officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian, who was later transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Using technology from the department’s Real-Time Intelligence Center, police were able to quickly locate both the vehicle and Caldwell. She was taken into custody and booked at the Fayette County Detention Center.

Investigation ongoing; more charges possible

The Lexington Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the incident. Authorities said additional charges are possible as the case develops.
