The incident occurred around 1:50 a.m. on April 16, when the suspect reportedly climbed the fence at the Washington Place Courtyard of the school located at 13 Central Avenue. According to authorities, the man gained entry through a side alley door and spent approximately one hour inside the building.

Once inside, the suspect attempted to access the school’s main office without success. He then broke into two other offices, including one that contained a safe. Police said the suspect failed to breach the safe but did leave with unspecified school property.

“The suspect climbed the fence at the Washington Place Courtyard of North Star Academy,” Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. said in the department’s public statement.

Surveillance footage captured the man during the incident, and Newark police have released images in an effort to identify him. Authorities did not describe the nature of the items taken or the value of the stolen property.

Investigation continues

The suspect exited the building at approximately 2:50 a.m. through the Washington Place emergency exit. There were no signs of forced entry into the main office, and no injuries were reported in connection with the break-in.

The investigation is being handled by the Newark Police Division, which is working to gather leads and review additional surveillance footage from the area.
