Monroe Township police have charged an East Windsor man in connection with a $30,000 jewelry theft that occurred during a home renovation project.
Kevin Munoz Reardon, who had been working in the house as a painter, is now facing third-degree theft charges after authorities say he took high-value jewelry from a bedroom while on the job.
The investigation began on February 21, when the homeowner reported the jewelry missing.
Detective Robert Bennett of Monroe’s Criminal Investigations Division, with help from New Jersey State Police troopers Samantha Fleming and Daniela Solano Sarmiento, used a polygraph test to zero in on Munoz Reardon. The test results suggested he had knowledge of the missing items. In a twist, he later returned most of the stolen jewelry, but that didn’t spare him from being charged.
Police Chief Griffin Banos used the case as a cautionary tale for residents, urging people to take extra care when hiring contractors or workers. “It’s about safeguarding your family and your peace of mind,” Banos said, recommending homeowners vet all workers through reviews, references, and reputable companies.
While the jewelry may have been mostly recovered, the message is clear: a little caution up front can prevent a lot of heartbreak later.
