CUMBERLAND, MD — A 24-year-old man was arrested Saturday after Cumberland Police responded to an assault in progress on Columbia Street that drew the attention of bystanders, authorities said.
Disturbance draws police response
Police were called to the first block of Columbia Street at approximately 12:02 p.m. on April 12 for reports of an active assault. When officers arrived, they found a male and female involved in a heated altercation that had attracted several witnesses.
The male, later identified as Eric Leighton Christopher Brewington of Cumberland, was immediately detained due to his disorderly behavior at the scene.
Following an investigation, officers determined that Brewington had assaulted the other individual involved. The victim had visible injuries consistent with the reported attack, police said.
Brewington was arrested and transported to police headquarters for processing.
Brewington was charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace due to loud noise. He was later presented before a District Court Commissioner and released on a $2,500 unsecured personal bond.
