Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and current congresswoman, shared the news on social media, writing, “I’m so proud to have earned @MomsDemand’s Gun Sense Candidate distinction. I’ve been working with Moms Demand Action since 2017 when I first ran for office, and I’m committed to continuing the fight to keep our kids safe from gun violence as governor.”

The Gun Sense Candidate distinction is given to political candidates who support stronger gun safety laws and demonstrate a commitment to reducing gun violence. It is not an endorsement but a recognition of alignment with the organization’s mission and policy goals.

National advocacy movement

Founded in the aftermath of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Moms Demand Action has grown into a nationwide grassroots organization. The group advocates for legislation aimed at preventing gun violence and works within communities and with businesses to promote responsible gun ownership.

Now led by Executive Director Angela Ferrell-Zabala, Moms Demand Action operates in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., as a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, which boasts nearly 11 million supporters.
