New Jersey Prepares for First Spring Thunderstorm of 2025 as Two Inches of Rain Expected

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey is bracing for its first spring thunderstorm of the year Monday night, with forecasters warning of heavy rainfall, patchy fog, and a significant shift in wind direction as a cold front moves through the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a forecast calling for thunderstorms and showers through 3 a.m. Tuesday, with a 90% chance of precipitation. Rainfall totals could reach up to two inches in some areas.

“Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall,” the service said in its updated outlook.

Conditions will also bring reduced visibility, with patchy fog expected between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. Temperatures will dip to around 42 degrees overnight as winds shift from the south at 5 mph to a northwesterly direction after midnight.

Tuesday will bring a gradual improvement, with mostly cloudy skies clearing by midday and a high near 55 degrees. Winds from the northwest are forecast to increase to between 10 and 15 mph.

The incoming system marks a seasonal shift as New Jersey transitions from March’s colder patterns to a more volatile spring weather cycle.

The National Weather Service advised residents to stay alert for localized flooding and changing travel conditions through early Tuesday morning.
