BEDMINSTER, N.J. — Former President Donald Trump on Monday appointed Alina Habba, his longtime legal representative and current Counselor to the President, as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, effective immediately.
Habba, who has served as Trump’s personal attorney and spokesperson in multiple legal matters, will now take over the top federal prosecutor role in her home state. In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump announced, “It is with great pleasure that I am announcing Alina Habba, Esq., who is currently serving as Counselor to the President… will be our interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey.”
Habba confirmed the appointment in a video statement shortly after Trump’s announcement. “I’m sure you’ve seen President Trump has just put out a statement that he has appointed me as the interim US attorney for the state of New Jersey, my home state,” Habba said.
In her remarks, Habba took aim at top Democratic officials in the state, saying, “There is corruption, there is injustice, and there is a heavy amount of crime right in Cory Booker’s back guard and right under Governor Murphy, and that will stop.” She added, “I think Cory Booker and Governor Murphy have failed the state of New Jersey.”
Habba also pledged to work closely with Trump allies, including former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, to further what she described as the former president’s agenda. “We’re going to do a bang-up job. I cannot wait. It’s a great honor,” she said.
Habba declined to name specific investigations or targets when asked who she intends to prosecute. “We got to see what’s going on. I know you’d love that narrative,” she said, before clarifying, “You mentioned politicians. I didn’t, actually.”
Habba stated she will leave the White House to take up her new post in New Jersey.
“I will be leaving the White House soon and going to New Jersey to serve in my current role and my new role,” she said.
