NEWPORT NEWS, VA — A quick trip to the grocery store for bananas and applesauce turned into a six-figure payday for a Hampton man after he purchased a $100,000 winning Virginia Lottery ticket.
Sherman Morning bought the lucky $100,000 Extreme Cash scratch-off at the Food Lion on 11712 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. After taking the ticket home and scratching it, he discovered he had won the first of three top prizes in the game.
Two more top prizes remain unclaimed in $100,000 Extreme Cash, which offers prizes ranging from $5 to $100,000. The odds of winning the game’s top prize are 1 in 1,101,600.
All Virginia Lottery profits support K-12 education, with Hampton receiving more than $23.3 million in funding last fiscal year. In total, the Lottery contributed over $934 million to public schools statewide in Fiscal Year 2024.
