CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Chesapeake Police Department conducted compliance checks at ten tobacco and vapor stores last week, finding six in violation of underage sales laws.
Using an undercover, underage asset, officers successfully purchased vapor products at more than half of the businesses inspected. Each sale resulted in charges under Virginia Code § 18.2-371.2, which prohibits selling or distributing retail tobacco and hemp products to anyone under 21.
First-time offenders face a $500 civil penalty, with repeat violations within three years carrying fines of up to $2,500.
“We remain committed to enforcing laws that protect our youth and ensure businesses follow regulations,” the department stated.
Authorities say enforcement efforts will continue to ensure compliance.
