Study Reveals New Jersey's Top Ten Vices

TRENTON, N.J. — A new study analyzing online search trends has revealed that alcohol is the most common vice New Jersey residents are determined to quit in 2025.

The research, conducted by Start Your Recovery, found that alcohol ranked highest, with 12.22 searches per 10,000 residents looking for ways to quit. Smoking followed closely with 9.37 searches, while gambling (8.77), junk food (5.76), and pornography (4.25) rounded out the top five.

The study analyzed Google search data from over 1,000 keywords related to quitting habits, such as “how to quit alcohol” and “how to stop gambling.” The findings suggest that many New Jersey residents are looking to make significant lifestyle changes in the new year.

Brooks Lape, co-founder of Start Your Recovery, emphasized the importance of taking steps toward self-improvement. “Recognizing the need to quit is a crucial first step on the path to self-improvement,” Lape said.

A separate report from Drive Research found that 3 in 10 Americans made New Year’s resolutions for 2024, with 79% focusing on improving health.

The findings suggest a strong focus on health and self-control among New Jersey residents. While alcohol, smoking, and gambling ranked highest, other common habits like coffee consumption and gossiping also made the list.
