New Jersey offers aid to federal workers affected by layoffs
TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) is assisting federal workers impacted by recent layoffs, providing unemployment benefits, career services, and job training resources.
“Here in New Jersey, we value our public servants and aim to empower them with the skills and resources needed to best serve the people of our nation,” said Governor Phil Murphy.
New Jersey’s labor force includes about 50,000 federal employees, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While NJDOL did not disclose specific figures, officials reported a sharp rise in unemployment claims from federal employees, including the highest single-day total since the layoffs began.
Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo, a former federal employee who previously filed for unemployment, acknowledged the difficulty of the situation.
“Our department stands ready to help valued civil service employees who call New Jersey home receive the unemployment benefits they have earned and career support services they need,” he said.
Eligible federal workers can apply for unemployment benefits if their official duty station was in New Jersey or if they are state residents who worked abroad. NJDOL has also introduced a redesigned unemployment system, offering an improved claimant portal for filing and tracking claims.
Additionally, NJDOL is promoting career resources, including My Career NJ, an interactive digital hub launched last year that provides online training and job-seeker tools. In-person services are available at New Jersey’s One-Stop Career Centers, where employment counselors provide job placement assistance.
