New Jersey's Senior Citizen Exodus Continues for Third Straight Year

New Jersey tops nation in outbound moves as residents seek affordability

TRENTON, N.J. — For the seventh consecutive year, New Jersey has led the nation in outbound migration, with 67% of United Van Lines customers leaving the state in 2024, according to the company’s 48th Annual National Movers Study. The primary reasons cited were retirement (22%) and the desire to be closer to family (20%), with more than 40% of those leaving aged 65 or older.

Among New Jersey residents moving away, 20% relocated to Florida, a state known for its lower taxes and warmer climate. The trend highlights a broader national shift, as Americans increasingly prioritize affordability and proximity to family over urban living.

New York followed closely behind, ranking third among the top outbound states. High housing costs and economic pressures continued to drive migration, with a significant number of residents opting for lower-cost states like Delaware, which ranked second in inbound moves. Of those moving to Delaware, 12% came from New York.

Pennsylvania did not rank among the top outbound states, but its migration patterns reflect a balance of moves in and out. The study noted that Philadelphia remains a draw for some, while others relocate to suburban and rural areas in search of affordability.

The data underscores a continuing trend of population shifts toward the Southeast and other lower-cost regions, with West Virginia leading the nation in inbound migration.
