ZANESVILLE, Ohio — A Zanesville woman has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 16 years for the murder and concealment of her father-in-law’s body, authorities announced Wednesday.
Brittany Cole, 34, pleaded guilty to murder and abuse of a corpse in the death of 62-year-old David Cole Sr. before Muskingum County Judge Gerald Anderson, who immediately imposed the maximum penalty. The case, investigated by Zanesville Police Detective Bryan Ruff, revealed a scheme involving deliberate overdose, concealment, and financial exploitation.
Planned Overdose and Cover-Up
According to investigators, Brittany Cole admitted to administering a lethal combination of Tylenol 3 with codeine and ZzzQuil to David Cole Sr. on the night of December 24, 2024. When he later complained of pain, she provided an additional dose, knowing it would be fatal. The next morning—Christmas Day—she found him deceased but did not report it.
Instead, Cole concealed the death, instructing family members to lie about his whereabouts. The family traveled to Orlando from December 26 to January 1, leaving the body in his bedroom.
On January 8, her husband, David Cole Jr., discovered the decomposing body and text messages between the couple showed their discussions about moving it. They eventually wrapped the remains in a tarp and plastic mattress cover, relocating it to a shed.
On February 10, Zanesville police responded to a 911 call and discovered the body in an advanced state of decomposition. An initial autopsy suspected natural causes, but further investigation and digital evidence—including Brittany’s Google search on December 25, “when someone dies how long does it take for the body to start smelling”—confirmed her role in his death.
Financial Motive Uncovered
Authorities determined that Brittany and David Jr. continued collecting David Sr.’s $2,300 monthly Social Security benefits after his death. Bank records showed transactions using the funds, including CashApp payments from David Jr. to Brittany for household expenses.
David Cole Jr. has not yet been charged, but prosecutors said an investigation into his involvement remains ongoing.

“Brittany Cole’s actions reflect a shocking betrayal of trust,” said Prosecutor Ron Welch. “She not only ended her father-in-law’s life but then exploited his death for financial gain, hiding the truth for weeks while manipulating her family.”
Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Litle added, “This case underscores the devastating impact of elder abuse and the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals.”
Swift Resolution in Muskingum County Court
The case was quickly resolved in Muskingum County, known for its efficient legal proceedings. Judge Anderson’s sentence ensures Cole will serve at least 16 years before she is eligible for parole.
