WASHINGTON, DC – An 18-year-old student was arrested Monday in connection with a violent robbery attempt at a Northeast Washington high school, police said.

The incident occurred on January 16 at approximately 12:40 p.m. in the 4800 block of Meade Street, Northeast. The suspect approached another student, demanded property, and, when refused, began assaulting the victim. The victim managed to escape and alert school security.

Following an investigation, detectives obtained a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant. On February 24, officers arrested Derek Weldon, 18, of Southeast DC, and charged him with assault with intent to commit robbery.

Authorities have not disclosed whether Weldon remains in custody or if additional suspects are involved.
