GOSHEN, N.Y. — A Wallkill man has pleaded guilty to assaulting an MTA train conductor and later fleeing the jurisdiction, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced Monday.
Damarion Gulley, 24, admitted to second-degree assault and second-degree bail jumping in Orange County Court on Thursday. Prosecutors will recommend a combined prison sentence of four to six years when he is sentenced on May 8.
Authorities say the assault occurred on September 7, 2023, at the Port Jervis train station. Gulley and three others ran across the tracks in front of a train and were denied entry onto the train by the conductor. The group then followed the conductor off the platform and attacked him, breaking his jaw.
Gulley later failed to appear in court and was found out of state nearly a year later before being returned to the jurisdiction by law enforcement. A co-defendant, Kamrin Deleon, 21, has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing. Two juveniles involved had their cases handled in Family Court.
“That a train conductor would be violently assaulted simply for doing his job is unacceptable,” Hoovler said.
A train conductor’s refusal to allow reckless passengers on board led to a violent attack, and the assailant now faces years behind bars.
