Hero cop killed in UPMC Memorial shooting, two others injured in Pennsylvania

YORK, Pa. — A West York Borough police officer was killed and two other law enforcement officers were injured in a shooting at UPMC Memorial on Sunday, officials said. Officer Andrew Duarte was fatally shot while responding to the active shooter incident, marking a devastating loss for the law enforcement community.

Chief David L. Lash of the Northern York County Regional Police Department confirmed Duarte’s death in a statement, calling his sacrifice the ultimate act of bravery. “His courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten,” Lash said.

A Springettsbury Township officer and a Northern York County Regional Police officer were also wounded in the attack. The latter has since been released from WellSpan York Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Authorities credited Pennsylvania State Police troopers for providing life-saving care on the scene, applying a tourniquet to the injured officer’s leg before he was transported for treatment.

More than 60 officers and state troopers responded to the crisis, running toward danger as patients and staff fled for safety. Lash commended their actions, stating he had never witnessed “such an overwhelming display of bravery” in his 32 years in law enforcement.

Hospital staff and management were also praised for their coordination and professionalism during the crisis. “Their support and resilience made a profound difference,” Lash said.

Community members and local businesses, including Mission BBQ, have shown support for law enforcement officers in the wake of the tragedy. Messages of condolence and gratitude have poured in across social media, reinforcing what Lash described as a strong bond between police and the community.

Authorities have not yet released details about the shooter or the circumstances leading up to the incident. Investigators continue to piece together the events that unfolded at the hospital.

The loss of Officer Duarte has left an indelible mark on York County. “Our world can be a dangerous place,” Lash said, “but I rest easier knowing that our county is protected by some of the finest law enforcement professionals in the nation.”
