NEW YORK — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for 52-year-old Vernon Glasford, who went missing after a boat capsized near the entrance to the Ambrose Channel on Sunday afternoon.
Glasford, a Bronx resident, was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans, and black boots. The search, which covered approximately 842 square miles over 30 hours, was called off Monday at 6 p.m. after extensive efforts by multiple Coast Guard units and partner agencies.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Vernon Glasford,” said Capt. Jonathan Andrechik, Coast Guard Sector New York commander. “The decision to suspend a search is always difficult.”
The response included Coast Guard cutters, helicopters, and small boats, along with assistance from the NYPD, FDNY, New Jersey State Police, and Sandy Hook Pilots. Five other individuals were rescued and taken to area hospitals for treatment.
The Coast Guard is now working with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation on the next steps in the investigation.
